These extracts are transcribed from material handed down within my family. I don’t know the original researcher. The quality of the original notes is quite poor. Any mistakes are probably mine.
The TOVI referred to is TOVI the Proud, possible standard bearer to Canute, with links to the founding of Waltham and its Abbey in the 11th century.
EXTRACTS FROM DOMESDAY (Translation) Glossary
SURREY
“In Godalming hundred the Bishop himself holds in a demesne REDESSOLHAM (Rodsell, in Puttenham) , TOVI held it in the time of King Edward and could put it under the protection of what lord he pleased (dum eo potuit ire quo voluit) - it was then assessed for 5 hides, now for nothing. The land is for 2 ploughs; there are 3 villeins and 4 cottars with 1 plough; and 2 acres of meadow; wood worth 4 hogs. In the time of King Edward and afterwards, and now, it was (and is) worth 40 shillings.
THE LAND OF St LEUTRED
In Amelbridge (Emleybridge) Hundred the Abbot of the Cross of St Leutred holds 7 hides and 3 virgates of land in Aissele (principle manor of Esher) by gift of King William. TOVI held it of King Edward. The land is for 2 ploughs; in the demesne there is 1 and 4 villeins and 11 cottars with ploughs. Since that saint has held it it has never paid gold.
THE LAND OF RICHARD, SON OF COUNT GILBERT
In Tenridge (Tendridge) Hundred the same Robert (de Walevile) holds of Richard FERLEGA (Farley). TOVI held it of King Edward. It was then assessed for 6 hides, now for half a hide. The land is for 21/2 ploughs; in demesne there is 1, and 4 villeins and 1 border with 1 plough. There is 1 serf and 1 ox. In the time of King Edward, and now, it is (and was) worth 60 shillings; when he received it, 20 shillings.
THE LAND OF THE KING
In Wochinges (Woking) Hundred, In Gildeford (Guildford) King William has 75 closes (hagae) wherein dwell 175 homagers
Randulf the Sheriff holds 1 close which he has up to this time holden of the Bishop of Bayeux. The homagers however testify that it is not attached to any manor but that he who held it in the time of King edward granted it to TOVI, the Reeve of the vill in discharge of a forfeiture of his.
THE LAND OF ODARD
In Amelbridge (Emleybridge) Hundred, the same Odard holds Molesham (West Mousley) TOVI held it of King Edward. It was then assessed for 6 hides and 1 virgate; now for 1 hide. The land is for 1 plough; in demesne there is 1; and 10 villeins and 5 cottars with 4 ploughs. There is a church, and 2 serfs. In the time of King edward it was worth 100 shillings, afterwards 50 shillings, now 4 pounds.
BUCKINGHAMSHIRE
THE LAND OF MANNO THE BRETON
In Burneham (Burnham) Hundred, in Celfunte (Chalfont St Giles, alia Elsthorpe, in Wingrave) Maigno holds 4 hides and 3 virgates; there is land for 15 ploughs; in the demesne there is 1 hide, and on it are 3 ploughs, and 13 villeins, and 8 borders have 12 ploughs. There are 4 serfs and 3 mills, one having 5 ‘ores’ and the other paying nothing. Meadow for 1 plough; woodland for 600 swine, and in the same wood is a falcon evry (area accepitris) In all it is worth 6 pounds and 10 shillings; when recieved 10 shillings. T.R.E. 6 pounds and 10 shilings. This manor TOVI, a thegn of King Edward held, and there Alric his man had half a hide and could sell (it).
HERVEYS LAND
In Dustentenberg (Desborough) Hundred, Hervey the legate holds in Hebestanes (Ibstone) - 2 hides of the King. There is 1 for 5 ploughs. In the demesne is half a hide, and on it are 2 ploughs, and 7 villeins have 2 ploughs and there could be a third. There is 1 smith and there are 4 serf, and woodland 100 swine. In all it is and was worth 4 pounds, T. R. E. 100 shillings. This manor TOVI held and could sell.
THE LAND OF WALTER GIFARD
In Stane (Stone) Hundred, in Edingeburge (Lendborough) Ralf holds of Walter 3 hides as one manor. There is land for 2 ploughs, one is there and there could be another. There are 2 bordars and meadow for 2 ploughs. It is worth 30 shillings. When recieved 60 shillings. T.R.E. 40 shillings. This manor TOWI (or TOFIG) a man of Alric son of Goding, held and could sell.
