These pages are the story of my family. The Toveys of the past tended to keep everything, from letters to lists, paintings to photos, diaries to scrapbooks. These have been passed down the generations, along with some key characteristics, a number of creative gifts and some family names.
Most of the material concerns Duncan Tovey, born in 1872, who in 1914 went to war with the London Scottish Regiment, as part of the British Expeditionary Forces. Duncan combined an extraordinary collection of traits and talents that resulted in a wealth of written and pictorial material; revealing a social world at the turn of the twentieth century rich in life. In his time he was a prolific writer of plays, prose, verse and song. He was an actor and comic entertainer. He took these gifts into society and to the Front.
