Duncan was a founding member of the Glenworple Highlanders, one of the London Scottish Regimental Associations. Duncan’s father, Duncan Crookes Tovey, was Rector of St Mary’s Church in Worpledon, Surrey. With a nod to his love of all things Scottish, Duncan referred to Worplesdon as Glenworple and often wrote under the pseudonym ‘Glenworple’.
The current Glenworplers, tell how an association was formed and named the Glenworple Highlanders. The original name may have come from a song written by Duncan some years before. This song, Glenworple Highlandmen, has now been adopted by the Calgary Highlanders and is sung at social functions. There is a line in the song which refers to tartan spiders, as located on Duncan’s early map of Glenworple.
Duncan and his London Scottish fellows would often stop off at Worplesdon on their way back from regimental exercises, or when visiting the rifle ranges at Bisley.
